Dress for the Japanese Summer with a Yukata Workshop
August 18, 2016
After trying a few times with the help of the shop manager, I think I am nearly ready to get dressed in a yukata by myself.
Yukata is a summer-weight kimono made of lightweight cotton, and it is the attire of choice for summer festivals.
From August 26 through 28 is the Roppongi Hills Matsuri, this year again there will be some 20 shops with stalls selling food and drinks, as well as music and dance performances and a wonderful, festive atmosphere.
There some things that are quintessential to summer in Japan: kakigori (shaved ice), hanabi (fireworks), and natsu matsuri (summer festivals) are just a few. But just as much a symbol of the Japanese summer is the garment that often accompanies these events: the yukata. A summer-weight kimono made of lightweight cotton, it is the attire of choice for summer festivals, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's easy to get into.
I have owned a yukata. But I don't know how to get into it on my own. Then,I found KENMA x JOTARO SAITO offers kimono wearing workshops. This beautiful shop at Roppongi Hills sells stunning kimonos and yukatas. For those who purchase a garment there, the staff will assist you in getting dressed in it. But even if you purchased your yukata elsewhere, you can book a free one-on-one lesson on how to properly put it on. (advance reservation required)
I booked my appointment over the phone, and was greeted by the store manager when I arrived. She helped me put on my yukata and tied the obi for me, explaining each step as she went. Then, she stepped back and allowed me to try it for myself, ready to help if I needed it. It took me a few attempts, but I was finally able to get it to look almost like it did when she did it. It felt like such an accomplishment that I think.
Now that you're in your yukata, where to go? From August 26 through 28 is the Roppongi Hills Matsuri, which is the perfect chance to show off your new image. I have been going every year for a while, and this year again there will be some 20 shops with stalls selling food and drinks, as well as music and dance performances and a wonderful, festive atmosphere. See you there!
