Tokyo Bay Fireworks Festival Goes Out with a Bang
August 25, 2015
From the Sky Deck open to the residents, they could see the fireworks in the open air, with Rainbow Bridge and the beautiful night view.
Seeing the fireworks from the poolside floor-to-ceiling windows is extraordinary. *This picture was taken with a special permission.
After enjoying the fireworks from the poolside they moved into the dining room at the HILLS SPA, where they were served a special five-course dinner made with seasonal summer ingredients. *Pictures are for reference only.
Fireworks festivals are an essential part of summer in Japan, and every major city has at least one each year. In Tokyo, one of the biggest is the Tokyo Bay Fireworks Festival, which was held on Saturday, August 8 this year. I have always enjoyed watching the fireworks, even though I find myself at a different location each time. This year I watched them from Atago Green Hills Forest Tower, which provided a truly spectacular view.
The most recent Tokyo Bay fireworks held a greater than usual significance, as they will likely be the last until at least the year 2020. This is because Harumi Pier, from where the fireworks are set off, will be going under construction soon as one of the venues for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Last year's fireworks were cancelled due to a typhoon, making these even more special.
Atago Green Hills Forest Tower played host to two different options for watching the fireworks this year. First, residents were invited to head up to the building's rooftop, or Sky Deck, where they could see the display in the open air, with Rainbow Bridge and the Tokyo skyline surrounding it. It was a beautiful night with a nice breeze that made watching the fireworks from an outdoor rooftop extremely enjoyable.
The other event was a special dinner open to HILLS SPA members. First, guests gathered in the gym, where they could watch the fireworks through the poolside floor-to-ceiling windows. Next, they moved into the dining room, where they were served a special five-course dinner made with seasonal summer ingredients. The event was so popular that it quickly filled up, with other members on a waiting list.
Perhaps it was just the comfortable setting or maybe it was because it was the last event for a while, but I got the idea that the fireworks this year were even longer and more impressive than in the past. In any case, they certainly went out with a bang and gave me something to look forward to in 2020!
