One of the many things I love about living in the Roppongi area is that it never stands still; people are always on the go, and the neighborhood itself is constantly changing.
So when I heard that the theme of this year's Roppongi Art Night, one of my favorite area events of the year, was "Move Your Body!" my first thought was how fitting it would be.
I was definitely not disappointed, as the event lived up to its promise and more.
As I approached the Roppongi Hills Arena from the bottom of Keyakizaka, I heard the rhythmic sounds of drumbeats. When I reached the space, which had been renamed The Body in Connection Theater for the occasion, I was greeted by an energetic performance of music and dance, with influences from places as diverse as Japan, Brazil and Korea. It was virtually impossible not to smile and clap along to the music.
Later on in the same venue was a silent disco performance, in which participants wore headphones and danced to music that others couldn't hear. It was an interesting concept that brought a whole new perspective to the relationship between sound and movement.
As with past editions of Art Night, there were plenty of works on display all around Roppongi, both indoors and outdoors. But this time there were also any number of interactive elements, including a parade through the local streets, music and dance performances, and even a collaborative city-building game played on a life-sized board.
I had so much fun exploring Roppongi Art Night that I barely noticed the time passing, and before I knew it, it was approaching midnight. If that's not a sign of a successful event, I don't know what is!
