An American-style Halloween Celebration in Tokyo
November 21, 2013
At Motoazabu Hills, a private Halloween party was held for residents and guests. The staff dressed up in costumes with the residents added enthusiasm to the party.
The party was complete with face painting, balloon animals, coloring tables and professional photography.
In many places in the Motoazabu area, children were able to go trick-or-treating.
As a child growing up in the United States, one of my favorite autumn events was Halloween, when my siblings and I would dress up in fun costumes and my parents would take us around the neighborhood, ringing doorbells and reciting that familiar line,"Trick or Treat!"
So when I first moved to Japan, I was a bit surprised to see that Halloween is largely a holiday for adults here.
That, however, is not the case in the area of Moto Azabu. On October 31, as I made my way toward Motoazabu Hills from Azabu Juban, I passed several groups of kids, all in costume, excitedly running along the streets as their parents trailed behind them.
It was a scene that reminded me of my own childhood, and it put a smile on my face to see it. I soon learned that Moto Azabu is a rare neighborhood in Tokyo that actually participates in real trick-or-treating.
As I neared the entrance of Motoazabu Hills, I saw a line of children waiting to be handed a piece of candy by a staff member of the Japanese restaurant Togo. The same scene repeated itself in the lobby of the building, and again in several other buildings around the area.
For residents of Motoazabu Hills and their guests, there was also a private Halloween party, complete with face painting, balloon animals, coloring tables and professional photography.
It was a great jumping off point for families who would later be hitting the streets. My only negative thought was that it's too bad more places in Tokyo don't offer similar Halloween events for kids!
