Celebrating Creativity with Andaz Salon
September 29, 2016
The Andaz Tokyo hosts many Salon events each year, and each is just as interesting and inspiring as the last. I joined a talk and demonstration by Shukou Tsuchiya, a Japanese ink-wash artist.
Mr. Tsuchiya is a master of the traditional Japanese art known as nanboku suiboku, or monochrome ink painting. It was amazing to see how nothing more than black ink and water could be used to create images that looked so real and three-dimensional.
He has collaborated with many well known international brands and he often uses his skills to paint nontraditional subjects. Examples of these include the face of Che Guevara surrounded by flowers.
Sometimes we all need a little inspiration, and this is exactly what the Andaz Salon series of events aims to provide. The Andaz Tokyo in TORANOMON HILLS hosts many Salon events each year, and each is just as interesting and inspiring as the last. The other day, I joined a talk and demonstration by Shukou Tsuchiya, a Japanese ink-wash artist.
Mr. Tsuchiya is a master of the traditional Japanese art known as nanboku suiboku, or monochrome ink painting. While he is classically trained, he spoke about wanting to make his art form "cool" and "fresh" by bringing it into unexpected places, such as clubs and luxury fashion stores. He has collaborated with many well known international brands and he often uses his skills to paint nontraditional subjects. Examples of these include the face of Che Guevara surrounded by flowers, and the shape of a skull surrounding a serene river and waterfall scene.
According to Mr. Tsuchiya, he is "always waiting for inspiration," but for those of us at the event we didn't have to wait long. After a short Q&A session, he did a live painting demonstration, which was the highlight of the evening. It was amazing to see how nothing more than black ink and water could be used to create images that looked so real and three-dimensional. Those of us who were at the event definitely left feeling inspired!
