Mirror Balls and Colored Glass Light Up ARK Hills
December 22, 2015
Karajan Place at ARK Hills partnered with Mirror Bowler this year, an art collaborative that specializes in works utilizing mirror balls, for a unique light display.
The night I visited was quite windy, and as the wind moved the pieces, the way the light reflected changed, making it really come alive.
There are also smaller mirror balls and glass pieces hanging from the arch opposite Suntory Hall.
The end of the year has again come to Tokyo, which means only one thing: the entire city is covered with twinkling lights as all the different buildings and neighborhoods compete to have the best winter light display. From rows of trees covered in tiny LEDs to towering Christmas trees and even light shows set to music, there is something to be seen just anywhere you may find yourself after dark. But this year, I found one of the most unique light displays to be the one in Karajan Place at ARK Hills.
For this year's illumination event, ARK Hills partnered with Mirror Bowler, an art collaborative that specializes in works utilizing mirror balls. The two main pieces in the installation - the Christmas tree and another round, spiky object - are made with mirror balls at the center, which are then surrounded by panels of glass in pastel colors. The colors are achieved by covering the glass in a special film, but the effect is similar to stained glass. Spotlights around the pieces are caught by the mirrors and then reflected back through the colored glass for a beautiful, multicolored effect. There are also smaller mirror balls and glass pieces hanging from the arch opposite Suntory Hall.
What really adds to the attraction of this illumination is the unexpected way the materials are used. Mirror balls are rarely seen outside, and yet it seems like the perfect setting. The night I visited was quite windy, and as the wind moved the pieces, the way the light reflected changed, making it really come alive.
To fully appreciate Mirror Bowler's handiwork, I recommend getting a hot beverage and enjoying it at one of the outdoor tables at the French bistro Aux Bacchanales.
