A Classical Music Concert for the Whole Family
September 19, 2013
Twice a month, Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills hosts the Mama's Club Theater, an event that encourages parents to bring their small children to see a movie with them, without having to worry that their crying or voices will disturb other patrons. In a similar vein, MORI LIVING recently supported a casual classical music concert, geared specifically toward those with children, at Suntory Hall at ARK Hills.
The concert was divided into two sections, separated by a short question-and-answer session. It was led by the Japanese soprano Mami and also featured pianist Ivan Tibolla and violinist Gunther Sanin of the Orchestra dell'Arena di Verona. As someone with experience performing on stage myself, I was impressed by how the musicians never lost their concentration, even when noise from the audience grew to a fairly high level.
In addition to parents and their children, there were also quite a few grandparents present, who seemed to enjoy watching the young ones' reactions to the music. Some songs were more popular with the kids than others, but I loved seeing the little toddlers in front of me bouncing up and down and clapping during the upbeat portions of pieces like Czardas Nova by Gianmoena Sanin and Czardas by V. Monti. Another memorable moment was when a girl of about seven and her brother, about five, were dancing in the aisle with their mother to Il Postino by Luis Bacalov.
It was so refreshing to see the joyful reaction of children to classical music, and I hope concerts like this become more common, so that more young people can share in the experience.
