Dancing the night away at Roppongi Hills
September 03, 2012
After the initial festivities of the Roppongi Hills Bon Dance 2012 festival on August 24, Tokyo's bustling areas of Azabu-juban and Roppongi were even more alive than usual on August 25-26.
Azabu-juban's shops and eateries made the most of the festive mood- a long queue formed in front of a shop selling barbequed seafood, and an established sake maker from Ibaraki Prefecture offered explanations about their products while visitors sampled their rice wine.
The event attracted throngs of people in search of food and drink, while the sounds of taiko drums and music filled the air. Celebrating the 9th anniversary of the Roppongi Hills Bon Dance this year, drumbeats signaled the start of the Bon dance.
A fantastic atmosphere enveloped the Roppongi Hills Arena venue. Many of the festival goers were dressed in yukata (summer kimono), and children danced to the theme song from Doraemon, the Japanese cartoon series, warming spectators' hearts.
The atmosphere was very family friendly, with a fairground-style shooting gallery, "yo-yo fishing" for balloons, and other activities. The mouthwatering aromas from Roppongi Hills' restaurants lured even more people to the event.
I think Tokyo's summer festival traditions are the perfect way to bring the neighborhood- and the city- together.
I hope everyone enjoyed the delicious food, drumming and dancing as much as I did.
