A Big Turnout for Mori Building's Disaster Preparedness Training
March 27, 2015
I participated in CPR training at the Roppongi Hills Arena.
An information session was held for journalists for the first time, and was attended by representatives from roughly 15 media outlets.
Along with explanations about the vibration damping equipment, they told us about the conditions here after the March 11 earthquake.
As I have written on this blog before, Mori Building's properties are the absolute best when it comes to earthquake readiness. This of course includes the latest vibration-damping construction techniques, but it extends much further than that as well.
On March 11, to mark the fourth anniversary of the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami, Mori Building held a disaster preparedness training event at Roppongi Hills, which was attending by over 900 workers and residents and drew journalists from roughly 15 media outlets.
I tagged along with the journalists for an information session, in which Mori Building staff explained the various disaster preparation measures in place at Roppongi Hills. One thing that is very unique to the Roppongi Hills residences is that, even in the event of a large earthquake, the buildings are unlikely to lose power. Backup generators allow residents to continue using electric appliances such as refrigerators and lights, even when the city's power supply has been interrupted.
After the information session, we headed outside to the Roppongi Hills Arena, where various stations were set up to provide training to visitors in different skills. These included first aid, CPR, use of an evacuation chair, and how to safely navigate out of a smoke-filled room. Even the Azabu fire and police departments were on hand to answer questions and distribute samples of emergency food items.
I got a chance to participate in a short CPR training, during which I learned how to perform emergency resuscitation techniques and to use an automatic defibrillator. The staff member who instructed me was very friendly and knowledgeable, and the whole experience was very interesting. It actually inspired me to want to go a step further and obtain a certification in CPR!
