Movies and Music at Roppongi Hills
October 26, 2010
Among these is the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), which this year runs from October 23 to 31 at Roppongi Hills and surrounding locations.
After the opening ceremony during which stars walked the green carpet, the opening screening last Saturday was of The Social Network.
Last Friday evening I headed down to the Wired Caf? at Roppongi Hills, where I caught a performance by a vocalist and pianist, Harvey and Fred.
October is a month when people from the design and entertainment worlds descend upon Tokyo from all around the world to take part in a slew of different exciting events. Among these is the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), which this year runs from October 23 to 31 at Roppongi Hills and surrounding locations. Movies that will be shown range from indie foreign films to Hollywood blockbusters.
After the opening ceremony during which stars walked the green carpet, the opening screening last Saturday was of The Social Network. The film tells the somewhat disputed and controversial story of Facebook founder and world's youngest billionaire Mark Zuckerberg.
But movies aren't the only thing to keep Tokyoites entertained this month. In the spirit of TIFF, Roppongi Hills is currently hosting what is called Cinema October, which encompasses not only film viewings, but also live musical performances and late night happy hours.
Last Friday evening I headed down to the Wired Caf? at Roppongi Hills, where I caught a performance by a vocalist and pianist, Harvey and Fred. Harvey crooned out jazz standards such as George Gershwin's Summertime while Fred accompanied him. The audience (me included) loved the smooth, easy tones of Harvey's voice, as well as Fred's unique take on some classic piano tunes.
Those who haven't yet had the chance to catch one of the Cinema October live performances should head down to Roppongi Hills this coming weekend, as the event ends on Saturday. Be sure to check the schedule on the Roppongi Hills website, as times and venues vary. TIFF also ends this weekend with screenings of the closing film, The Town. The bank heist crime movie stars Ben Affleck, and has already received praise from critics around the world. I'm looking forward to catching it myself!
