Photographing Mori Living's Whimsical Christmas Cards
December 17, 2013
Over the years that I have been working with MORI LIVING, I have always looked forward to seeing the holiday postcards distributed at the residences each December.
Always beautifully designed and photographed, they also have a sense of humor to them that we don't always see in Christmas cards, particularly in Japan.
Previous years' cards have shown Santa Claus coming out of a helicopter to deliver gifts, or relaxing in a hot bath.
This year, I was invited to the set of the photo shoot for the holiday card.
Shot at Case in Kamiyamacho, it features Santa Claus seated on the floor of a Japanese-style tatami room, quietly decorating a bonsai tree with Christmas ornaments, as-presumably-the family sleeps in the rooms below.
I loved the idea of combining traditional Japanese elements with Western images of Christmas, and the photo was made even more beautiful since it was taken from the rooftop garden outside the apartment, showing the night sky as well.
Just as happens each year, the postcards will be distributed to MORI LIVING residents and will also be available at the front desk of each residence.
I can say from experience that they make great cards to collect or send to friends abroad!
