In structures designed to be earthquake resistant, the strength of columns, beams and special earthquake resistant walls resist earthquakes. Buildings designed in 1981 or afterwards [ based on new earthquake resistance requirements ] will not collapse even though damage such as cracked columns and beams, or flaked concrete may occur.
