GINZA SIX, Its Tokyo's Newest Landmark
July 05, 2017
Tokyo has gained a new shopping and dining destination, and it's the largest of its kind in the Ginza neighborhood. GINZA SIX is a massive new complex built on two adjoining blocks right on the main thoroughfare of Ginza Chuo-Dori, and it's already gaining a reputation as a place to visit for locals and tourists alike.
With 241 stores, GINZA SIX has something for everyone. From luxury brands such as Dior, Celine and Valentino, to a food floor filled with unique sweets, sandwiches, pies and more, there is such a variety on offer that it is easy to while away hours in the enormous building. So much so, that on my recent visit there was so much to see that I didn't even get to everything in one afternoon.
One of the most interesting aspects of GINZA SIX is the Noh theatre in the basement. Historically there was a Noh theatre in Ginza, but it had been moved to Shibuya many years ago. So GINZA SIX marks Noh's triumphant return to its original home.
Among the nine floors of shops, restaurants and cafes is the latest outlet of Tsutaya Books on the sixth floor. The store includes interesting nooks and corners on a variety of specialized subjects, ranging from music to samurai swords. Overall, the focus is on art, with various genres getting their own sections.
Speaking of art, throughout the GINZA SIX complex you will find works by creators from around the world. From the Yayoi Kusama pumpkins currently hanging above the central atrium, to a living wall by botanist Patrick Blanc, and a digital waterfall by TeamLab, various corners sport pieces created using myriad techniques.
Now through July 17, GINZA SIX is having its first sale, with about 90 stores offering between 20 and 70 percent off regular prices. It's the perfect chance to go for a shop if you havenZ't already!
But one of my favorite parts of GINZA SIX isn't a store at all. It's the airy rooftop garden, the largest in the Ginza area. With the perfect balance of greenery and a striking urban view, it is great for relaxing during a break from shopping and eating. Be sure to check it out when you visit GINZA SIX!
