Ever since I was a child, I have always loved looking at the sky. Sunrises and sunsets, wispy and fluffy clouds, and the night sky are all equally fascinating to me. So when I learned that Tokyo City View was holding an event called "HUAWEI presents Starry Sky Illumination," I knew I had to check it out.
There have been similar events at Tokyo City View in the past, but this year it was even more special because of a collaboration with the hit anime film "Your Name" (or "Kimi No Na Wa" in Japanese) showing now. The movie has had huge critical and commercial success, and is currently the second-highest grossing domestic film ever to be released in Japan.
In the first room of the Starry Sky Illumination, guests can use their smartphones to control projection mapping that appears on 16 windows of Roppongi Hills Mori Tower. I had fun changing the direction of the sky, changing the planet on the screen, creating and naming my own constellation, sending UFOs zipping across the room, and much more. In this room you can also play scenes from the Shinkai Makoto movie "Your Name", in which Roppongi Hills appears.
Two more rooms give visitors the illusion that they are walking amongst the stars. The first room has a projection of the actual starry sky and a mirrored floor, so that the stars can be seen from all directions. I recommend having a seat on the floor and looking down to get the full effect! Finally, walk through space and imagine its infiniteness in the second room that uses mirrors and tiny LED lights to create a twinkling sky. On your way out, don't forget to stop in the gift shop to pick up some starry sky-themed souvenirs!
