After a previous exhibit exploring the field of medicine through art, the Mori Art Museum is currently home to a variety of works that show various interpretations of space. Called "The Universe and Art," it runs through January 9 of next year. I recently joined a guided tour through the exhibit to learn more about it!
The exhibition is divided into four sections. The first is all about how humans see the universe, and there are lots of works and artifacts dating back centuries that show how our ancestors looked at the sky. In addition to a scroll telling The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter - Japan's oldest prose narrative - there are also mandalas from the 14th century, telescopes and globes from the 1700s and 1800s, and first-edition printings of books by such great astronomers as Galileo, Copernicus, Kepler and Newton. There's also a page of original hand drawings and notes by Leonardo da Vinci.
The second section is about the universe as space-time, and features so large-scale modern works, including Ekpyrotic String II by Mariko Mori who is an internationally acclaimed artist. We were lucky that during our tour the artist herself was able to join us to explain more about her piece, which was inspired by supersting theory!
The third and fourth sections are dedicated to aliens and space travel. T showcasing various photographs from space travel in the past, and models from ongoing projects of a lunar probe as well as Mars Ice House.
Whether you're an art buff or a science freak, "The Universe and Art" has something for everyone. Check it out!
