A Special Tour of "Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal" at Mori Art Museum
April 22, 2014
A special group tour of "Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal" held exclusively for MORI LIVING residents.
Our tour guide and the museum's director, Fumio Nanjo, is not only impressively knowledgeable, but he also makes learning about art fun.
A cocktail party attended by Director Nanjo was held after the tour.
Mori Art Museum has long been one of my favorite places in Tokyo to go for a little art and culture.
The museum's curators always manage to put together incredibly interesting and inspiring exhibitions that are fun to take in, even for those like myself who have no background in art.
The current exhibition, "Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal," is no exception.
Everyone knows Andy Warhol as the king of pop art, and the exhibit is an extremely comprehensive retrospective of the artist's work, including nearly 700 works spanning the beginning of his career to his final years.
It's a delight to wander through on one's own, but I recently had the opportunity to join a special group tour for MORI LIVING residents, during which we were treated to even more insights into Warhol and his work. Our tour guide and the museum's director, Fumio Nanjo, is not only impressively knowledgeable, but he also makes learning about art fun.
During the tour, Mr. Nanjo mentioned many things about Warhol's life that I had not known before, including that he began his career as a graphic designer in a corporate setting, that he was a devout Catholic, and that he made many visits to Japan and was even influenced by Japanese art is his work.
The exhibition spans several rooms, each just as interesting as the last. The bright colors and pop culture references mean it appeals to viewers of all ages (there were even children in the gallery, and they were just as engrossed as I was).
But for me, one of the highlights was a recreation of Warhol's famed "factory" studio space, complete with wooden boxes painted with his iconic Heinz Tomato Ketchup!
