Last weekend, Roppongi Hills welcomed a new tenant to West Walk a branch of the much-loved Parisian institution La Maison du Chocolat.
With nearly 40 years of history in France, the chain of gourmet chocolate shops is currently celebrating its 15th anniversary in Japan. The Roppongi Hills store is the fifth in the country and the fourth in Tokyo.
The shop is a small one, but the space has been used wisely. Along one wall are five tables and ample seating, perfect for enjoying a cup of hot chocolate or an eclair after lunch or as a break during shopping.
A large, brown-tinted mirror gives the illusion of more space, while also creating a warm, welcoming feeling. The menu consists of a limited selection of La Maison du Chocolat's famed chocolates and pastries, as well as hot chocolate beverages.
During the opening reception last week, guests who packed into the store couldn't get enough of the sweet treats, which they enjoyed with celebratory champagne.
I sampled a chocolate eclair, which is one of the store's most popular items, and it was immediately clear why it is a top seller. Smooth, rich chocolate cream filled the soft, slightly chewy pastry, with even more chocolate smeared on top.
It was the kind of thing that is so indulgent that one is definitely enough-but that doesn't mean I won't be back for another one soon.
