St. Patrick's Day Comes to Tokyo
March 08, 2011
To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, Ikon Europubs, Biervana and Murphy's Irish Stout are organizing and sponsoring a competition to crown one special lady as Tokyo's very first St. Patrick's Day Parade Queen.
Operated by beer and wine importer Ikon Europubs, Biervana stocks over 100 different kinds of beer (nine of which are on tap), as well as an impressive selection of wine and cocktails.
Late last year, a popular new specialty bar opened at the Prudential Tower in Akasaka.

The beers range from little known Japanese brews and hard-to-find ales from across Europe and North America to lagers hailing from such exotic locales as Tahiti, Peru and South Africa. Chances are, if you're looking for that special beer you tried once while on holiday outside of Japan, Biervana will have it.

After interviewing over 20 entrants, the selection committee has now narrowed down the contestants to 12 finalists. Attendees to a gala evening on March 9 will be able to cast their vote for the winner, who will receive a host of amazing prizes, and who will then lead the parade on March 13 alongside the grand marshal.
Finalist Ritsuko Hoshi said she was attracted to the competition because of her interest in Ireland and Irish culture. "I used to live in Dublin for ten months and I've been back three times," she said. "I studied Irish music and 19th century Irish identity. Plus, I'm a poet and I love Irish poetry."
Another finalist, Jackie Suginaga, has a very different reason for joining the contest. "I'm Irish and last year I walked in the parade, but I was in the very back. This time I want to be at the front. It's having a bit of fun that's important," she said.
Both the gala evening and the parade itself are sure to be more than just a bit of fun for both contestants and spectators, so put on your best green outfit and head on down!
